Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will undergo an operation next week after suffering an injury towards the end of last weekend's Barclays Under-18 Premier League defeat at Reading.
And that means Jonathan Mitchell will play when United host West Bromwich Albion at Little Benton on Saturday (kick-off 11am).
Mitchell, 18, is usually involved with the under-21s and is one of several players with second-string experience included in Dave Watson's squad to face the Baggies.
Adam Armstrong has four goals in four games for the under-21s this term while Jonathyn Quinn has also netted four times for Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley 's side.
Defender Macaulay Gillesphey has also been regularly involved at second-string level as have Rolando Aarons, Tom Heardman and Greg Olley, while Ben Drennan and Callum Roberts have featured too.
The squad is: Rolando Aarons, Adam Armstrong, Daniel Barlaser, Kyle Cameron, Jamie Cobain, Ben Drennan, Liam Gibson, Macaulay Gillesphey, Tom Heardman, Ryan McKinnon, Jonathan Mitchell, Greg Olley, Jonathyn Quinn, Jordan Storey, Callum Roberts, Paul Woolston.
